About the Flash tamper set

One tamper with four tamping surfaces.

Start with a flat base or try a different profile on your coffee bed. The Flash tamper set lets you change the metal tamping surface beneath the same handle. You get four bases: flat, ripple, curved and waffle grid. The support rim helps you tamp level, and the click provides a recognisable stopping point.
What changes when you switch bases?Show less

The bases differ in the shape of the surface that touches the coffee. The diameter remains 58.35 mm. The set tamping force also stays the same when changing bases. Change that separately by replacing the spring. This lets you compare the tamping surfaces first while keeping the rest of your preparation the same.

What the Flash tamper set adds

Change the tamping surface beneath the same handle.

Choose flat, ripple, curved or waffle grid. The four stainless steel bases give you different surfaces for tamping coffee. Try them side by side without buying a separate tamper for each profile.

Keep your coffee, dose and recipe the same when comparing bases.

Hear and feel when to stop.

The spring mechanism clicks when you reach the set tamping force. With the standard spring, that is 30 lb, approximately 13.6 kg of tamping force. Press gently and stop at the click, so you rely less on feel to determine the endpoint.

Distribute the ground coffee evenly before tamping.

30 lb as standard · Approximately 13.6 kg of tamping force · Audible, tactile click

What does the click tell you?Show less

The click indicates that the mechanism has reached its set force. It does not measure how the coffee is distributed in your filter basket. Start with an evenly distributed coffee bed and a suitable dose. The stopping point helps you repeat the same action while working on your recipe.

Let the rim guide your tamper.

The support rim rests on the filter basket and guides the tamping base while pressing. This helps you keep the tamper level. Support the portafilter securely and place the rim flat before pressing.

The tamping base must move freely inside the basket. Remove any dosing ring and keep the rim clean.

Rim guidance · Manual operation

Why is the 58 mm description alone not enough?Show less

Internal dimensions and wall shape vary between filter baskets. A basket that narrows towards the bottom may stop the tamping base before you reach the coffee properly. Check the fit at your tamping depth. The 58.35 mm bases should fit closely without getting stuck.

Four bases

Flat: an even tamping surface without grooves. A practical starting point for adjusting your preparation.

Ripple: concentric ridges that leave a pattern of rings in the top of the coffee.

Curved: a curved tamping surface that gives the coffee bed a different surface shape.

Waffle grid: a crossing profile that leaves a grid in the top of the coffee.

Is this right for me?

Want to switch tamping surfaces?

The set suits espresso made with ground coffee in a compatible filter basket. Focus on the bases you want to use and how you currently tamp.

  • You want to compare different profiles.

For example, start flat, then try ripple or waffle grid with the same coffee. Keep track of your changes and assess the espresso's flavour and flow.

  • You want guidance while tamping.

You want to keep the tamper level more easily and have a recognisable stopping point. Rim guidance and the click support that action. You distribute the coffee yourself beforehand.

  • Your filter basket has room for 58.35 mm.

You use a 58 mm setup with a basket that lets this tamping base fit freely. Check the basket's shape and internal dimensions too. The four bases are not a set of different diameters.

How it works

Choose your base, distribute and tamp.

  1. 01

    Choose and fit your base.

Start with the flat base as a reference point or choose the profile you want to try. Change the base according to the included instructions and check that it is securely fitted. Remove any remaining coffee from the tamping surface.

  2. 02

    Distribute your weighed coffee.

Dose into a clean, dry filter basket. Break up clumps and distribute the coffee through the centre and along the edges. Ensure an even layer before tamping.

  3. 03

    Place the support rim flat.

Support the portafilter on a stable surface. Remove any dosing ring and clean the basket rim. Place the tamper level, so the support rim sits evenly.

  4. 04

Press until it clicks and lift straight up.

Move the handle gently downwards. Stop at the audible, tactile click. Release and lift the tamper straight out of the basket without rotating it further. Then brew your espresso.

Change one thing at a time.

Want to compare the bases? Use the same beans, dose, grind size and amount of espresso. Keep the same spring in the tamper too. Change only the base and taste the difference.
How do you make the comparison useful?Show less

For each brew, note the base used, coffee dose, yield and brew time. Taste the espresso at approximately the same temperature. Repeat the comparison so one unusual cup does not decide the outcome. If you find a preparation that tastes good, you can simply keep using that base.

Frequently asked questions

What else would you like to know?

Ask a question about the Flash tamper set
Which base should I use first?

Start with the flat base. It creates a smooth surface and gives you a simple starting point for your recipe. If you then want to try another profile, keep the other settings the same. You do not have to change bases each time.

Does a ripple or waffle-grid base make better espresso?

You cannot tell from the pattern alone. The profile changes the top of the coffee bed. Flavour also depends on your beans, grind, distribution and recipe. Compare the bases with the same preparation and choose what feels comfortable and tastes good to you.

Does the set fit every 58 mm filter basket?

Not automatically. The bases are 58.35 mm wide. The internal dimensions and any narrowing of the basket determine whether the base can move freely down to the coffee. If unsure, send us the brand and model of your filter basket.

Can I set the tamping force with a dial?

No. You change the set force by replacing the spring. The standard spring is 30 lb, and the set includes an extra spring. Follow the instructions for your version when changing it.

Should I tamp harder if my espresso flows too quickly?

Keep your tamping technique the same and first check your grind size, dose and coffee preparation. The click helps you repeat the tamp. Pressing harder and harder is not a reliable way to adjust your recipe.

Can I use the bases on another tamper?

The bases belong to this Flash set. Matching diameters do not mean the fittings match too. Check the connection and version before using a base on another tamper.

How do I keep the tamper and bases clean?

Remove coffee residue with a soft brush or cloth. Pay attention to the grooves on ripple and waffle-grid bases too. Keep the support rim clean so it can sit flat. Do not immerse the handle or spring mechanism, and do not use a dishwasher.
