About WDT Lightning 2.0

Loosen first. Then tamp.

Your coffee is ground and weighed. Before tamping, use Lightning 2.0 to break up clumps and distribute the coffee throughout your filter basket. Move the fine needles through the coffee bed by hand. The rotating ring lets you bring them closer together or further apart to suit the space you are working in.
Where does WDT fit into your preparation?Show less

WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique: distributing ground coffee with fine needles. Add this step between grinding and tamping. Lightning 2.0 helps prepare the loose coffee and comes with a stand for hanging the tool afterwards.

What Lightning 2.0 adds

Break up clumps before you tamp.

The fine needles move through the ground coffee and break up clumps as you stir. You also distribute the coffee below the surface, helping prepare a more even loose coffee bed. After distributing, compress the coffee separately with a tamper.

8 stainless steel needles · 0.4 mm diameter

Adjust the spread to your filter basket.

The rotating ring changes the distance between the needles. A wider spread covers a larger area. A narrower spread gives you more room near the rim. Choose what feels comfortable in your filter basket and move the tool by hand.

Rotating adjustment for needle spread

How do you choose the spread?Show less

Adjust the spread before placing the needles in the coffee. Choose a setting that lets you move gently through the basket without pushing against the wall. You do not need to cover the whole surface in one movement. Work along the edges too and distribute at different depths. Do not force the adjustment further.

Hang the tool up after use.

The top of the tool attaches magnetically to the included stand. The needles hang freely, so you do not have to lay them on the worktop after use. Pick the tool up from its holder for your next preparation.

Magnetic stand included

Why distribute before tamping?Show less

A flat surface does not tell you how the coffee below is distributed. Stirring through the coffee bed before tamping breaks up clumps and redistributes the loose coffee. A more evenly distributed coffee bed helps limit differences in flow. Your grind, dose and further preparation still affect your espresso.

Is this right for me?

When you prepare the coffee yourself.

Lightning 2.0 suits espresso made with ground coffee in a filter basket. Use it to distribute the loose coffee before tamping.

  • You want to distribute by hand.

Hold the tool and choose the movements and depth yourself. The rotating ring sets the spread. You do the stirring by hand.

  • You use your own filter basket and tamper.

Hold the tool freely above the filter basket. Choose a spread that allows the needles to move freely. Afterwards, tamp with your own correctly sized tamper.

  • You consider what you already have.

Already distributing your coffee with a WDT tool that works well? Consider whether the adjustable spread and magnetic storage add something to your preparation.

How it works

Distribute the coffee before tamping.

  1. 01

    Fill your filter basket.

Put your weighed ground coffee into the dry filter basket. A suitable dosing ring can help keep loose coffee within the rim while filling and distributing.

  2. 02

    Adjust the spread.

Take Lightning 2.0 off the stand. Turn the adjustment until the needles have your preferred spread. Leave enough room to move freely through your filter basket.

  3. 03

    Break up clumps and distribute.

Move the needles gently through the coffee bed. Work through the centre and along the edges, distributing the coffee below the surface too. Finish by levelling the top layer with light movements.

  4. 04

    Tamp the coffee.

Lift the needles out of the coffee. Remove any dosing ring and tamp the coffee level. Return the WDT tool to its stand after use.

Use light movements.

The needles are thin and sharp. Move them through the coffee without pushing hard against the base or wall. This prevents bending. Carefully remove remaining coffee with a soft brush and hang the tool back in place.

Frequently asked questions

What else would you like to know?

Ask a question about Lightning 2.0
Does a WDT tool replace my tamper?

No. The WDT tool breaks up clumps and distributes the loose coffee. Your tamper then compresses the coffee. Each tool has its own task.

What has changed compared with Lightning 1.0?

Version 2.0 lets you change the needle spread with a rotating adjustment. Version 1.0 has a fixed needle arrangement. With the 2.0, you can choose a narrower or wider spread.

Can I replace a needle?

Yes. The needles are replaceable, and six spare needles are included. Use a suitable spare if a needle becomes damaged. The tool has eight needles; the six spares are extras.

Can I also use Lightning 2.0 for filter coffee?

Yes, you can use it to distribute dry ground coffee before adding water. Move carefully through the coffee and avoid piercing the filter paper with the tips. The steps on this page focus on espresso.

Do I need a dosing ring?

You can use the tool without a dosing ring if there is enough room in your filter basket. A suitable ring raises the edge and helps keep loose coffee inside while distributing. If you already have one that fits well, you can keep using it.
