About the Flash Tamper 2.0

Press until it clicks.

How hard did you press last time? The Flash Tamper 2.0 gives you a recognisable stopping point. Its support rim rests on your filter basket and helps the tamping base move straight down. Press until you hear and feel the click.
What the tamper takes care of for youShow less

With espresso, you want to repeat what works well. This tamper gives you a reference point while tamping, so you rely less on feel. First distribute the ground coffee evenly. The tamper then compresses that distribution. Grind size, dose and the amount of espresso you brew remain key to the result.

What the Flash Tamper 2.0 adds

A defined stopping point with every tamp.

The spring mechanism gives an audible, tactile click when you reach the set tamping force. This tells you when to stop pressing. Press gently and stop at the click.

30 lbs as standard - approximately 13.6 kg of tamping force - audible, tactile click

Help with level tamping.

The support rim rests on your filter basket's rim and guides the tamping base during pressing. This means you need to make fewer corrections to the tamper's angle by hand.

The tamping base must fit freely inside your filter basket. Keep the basket rim clean.

Why the fit mattersShow less

A correctly sized tamping base fits closely to the wall without getting stuck. The basket's shape matters too, especially if it narrows towards the bottom. The support rim helps keep the tamper level. The spring provides feedback on force. They are two different aids within the same movement.

Tamp more lightly if that feels better.

Does the standard spring feel heavy to press? The included 15 lbs spring lowers the set tamping force to approximately 6.8 kg. To do this, replace the spring in the mechanism.

You change the tamping force by replacing the spring.

Extra spring included - 15 lbs - approximately 6.8 kg of tamping force

What the click tells youShow less

The click gives feedback on how much force you apply when tamping. It does not assess how your coffee is distributed. The three springs work together in the mechanism for tamping force and feedback. The benefit is an action you can repeat more easily. You do not have to keep guessing whether you have pressed hard enough.

Is this right for me?

Want more guidance while tamping?

The Flash Tamper 2.0 suits you if you want to make tamping easier to repeat within your current espresso setup.

  • You are unsure when you have pressed enough.

The click gives you a recognisable endpoint. This is useful if you are still building a routine or regularly switch between different tampers.

  • You find level tamping difficult.

The rim guide helps keep the tamping base level. You still need to start with evenly distributed coffee and a stably supported portafilter.

  • You use a compatible 58 mm filter basket.

The tamping base on this version is 58.35 mm wide. Check your basket's internal dimensions and shape, even if your machine is described as 58 mm.

How it works

Distribute. Position. Tamp.

  1. 01

    Distribute the ground coffee.

Dose into a clean, dry filter basket. Break up any clumps and distribute the coffee evenly throughout the basket.

  2. 02

Rest the support rim in place.

Support the portafilter securely. Remove any dosing ring and place the tamper on the basket, with the support rim resting flat on the edge.

  3. 03

    Press until it clicks.

Move the handle gently downwards. Stop when you hear and feel the click.

  4. 04

    Lift the tamper straight up.

Remove the tamper from the basket and brew your espresso. Remove any coffee residue from the tamping base before storing it.

Adjust your espresso through your recipe.

Does your espresso flow too quickly or too slowly? Keep your tamping technique the same and look at your grind size, dose and the amount of espresso in your cup. This lets you change one element at a time deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

What else would you like to know?

Ask a question about the Flash Tamper 2.0
Does this tamper fit every 58 mm filter basket?

The 58 mm description does not guarantee identical internal dimensions. The tamping base is 58.35 mm wide and must move freely down to the coffee. In a basket that narrows towards the bottom, the fit can change. If unsure, send us the brand and model of your filter basket.

Is 30 lbs the ideal force for espresso?

It is this tamper's standard setting. For a good tamp, you want to compress the coffee evenly and sufficiently. Pressing harder and harder does not automatically give better results. The click mainly helps you repeat the same action.

Can I adjust the tamping force?

Yes. You can replace the standard 30 lbs spring with the included 15 lbs spring. This changes the set tamping force from approximately 13.6 to 6.8 kg. The adjustment is made inside the tamper.

What is the difference between a flat and a ridged base?

A flat base leaves a smooth surface. A ridged base creates a pattern of rings in the top of the coffee. Both versions have rim guidance and click feedback. The pattern alone is not proof of better extraction.

How do I keep the tamper clean?

Remove coffee residue with a dry cloth or soft brush. Keep the support rim clean too, so it can rest flat on your filter basket's rim.
