TAMPING COFFEE

Tamp to a set depth.

With the CD tamper, you press your palm onto the broad top to tamp the coffee. The outer rim rests on the filter basket. Set how far the stainless steel base extends below that rim beforehand.
More about the CD tamperShow less

Match the depth to your coffee, dose and filter basket. The base needs to compress the coffee firmly before the outer rim limits its movement. Once you've found a suitable setting, you can use it again with the same recipe.

The circular grooves underneath leave a pattern on the coffee. Turn the ring to adjust depth. When tamping, press straight down.

Depth and tamping pressure

The ring controls depth, not a fixed tamping pressure. If the outer rim already touches the basket while the coffee is still loose, the base is too shallow. Pressing harder on the top won't correct that setting.

What helps with tamping?

Adjustment ring and grooved stainless-steel base of the MHW-3BOMBER CD tamper

A set depth for your recipe.

The adjustment ring determines how far the tamping base enters the basket. Use the same setting again with the same coffee and dose.

Readjust when the fill height of your coffee changes.

Manually adjustable tamping depth

The rim helps you tamp straight.

The broad outer rim rests on the filter basket when the tamper is pressed down. Position the tool straight from the start and press down evenly.

Support the portafilter on a stable surface.

The knurled sides provide grip when adjusting and lifting. Choose the walnut or metal version. Both have a stainless steel base with circular grooves.

YOUR WAY OF TAMPING

Prefer working with a set depth?

The CD tamper suits preparation where you keep the dose consistent and adjust the depth to match.

  • You use a suitable filter basket.

The base is 58.35 mm wide and intended for suitable 58 mm filter baskets. Check the actual internal diameter and that the base can move freely at tamping depth.

  • You adjust the depth yourself.

Find a setting that compresses the coffee sufficiently. When changing beans, dose or basket, check whether that setting still suits.

  • You want to tamp with your palm.

The CD has a low, broad top. Press straight down on it instead of holding a tall tamper handle.

FROM LOOSE COFFEE TO A PUCK

Distribute, adjust and tamp.

  1. 01

    Prepare your coffee.

Dose into a clean, dry filter basket and distribute the ground coffee. Support the portafilter on a flat, stable surface.

  2. 02

    Set the tamping depth.

Loosen the adjustment ring, change how far the base extends and tighten the ring again. Choose a depth that lets the base compress the coffee firmly before the outer rim rests on the basket.

  3. 03

    Press straight down.

Place the tamper straight in the basket and press evenly on top with your palm. Don't turn or tilt the tamper while pressing.

  4. 04

    Lift gently.

Lift the tamper straight out of the basket. Remove loose coffee from the rim and make your espresso. Keep the setting as long as it suits your recipe.

Circular grooves of the CD tamper and the pattern on the tamped coffee

The same depth needs a suitable dose.

The height of your coffee changes with more than just the number of grams. Different beans and a different grind can also affect fill height.
More about adjustingShow less

A setting that's too shallow can stop movement before the coffee is sufficiently compressed. After making a change, check that the base still reaches the coffee properly. Adjust your espresso recipe using grind, dose and yield. Use tamping depth to compress the coffee, not as a substitute for adjusting your grind.

ANOTHER QUESTION?

About depth, fit and tamping.

Ask us a question
What's the difference between the CD tamper and CD distributor?

The tamper compresses the coffee. Before that, use the distributor to level the surface with a turning movement. Their similar shape doesn't make them interchangeable.

Does the CD tamper provide a fixed tamping pressure?

No. You set the depth and apply the pressure yourself. The ring determines how far the base extends below the outer rim.

Should I turn the tamper while tamping?

No. Turn the ring to set the depth. While tamping, press straight down and lift the tamper gently.

What are the grooves in the base for?

They leave a circular ridged pattern on the coffee. That pattern alone doesn't guarantee better extraction. Distributing your coffee and tamping straight remain important.

Does the tamper fit every 58 mm portafilter?

The base has a diameter of 58.35 mm. Check that the filter basket has room for it, including at the depth where you tamp. A tapered basket may be narrower deeper down.

How do I clean the tamper?

Brush or wipe coffee residue out of the grooves. If needed, wipe the base with a slightly damp cloth and dry afterwards. Don't soak the wooden top in water.
