BEFORE TAMPING

Level your coffee surface.

Is your ground coffee piled up in the filter basket? The CD distributor levels the top layer with a short turning movement. Set how deeply the base enters the coffee yourself.
More about the CD distributorShow less

The four surfaces underneath move coffee at the surface. Set the depth so the distributor touches the top layer without already compressing the coffee firmly. Tamp as usual afterwards.

A flat surface doesn't tell you everything about distribution underneath. If your grounds have clumps, address those first with a WDT tool. The CD distributor has a different job: levelling the surface.

The four surfaces under the distributor smooth the coffee surface as you turn the tool. Remove the mound of ground coffee before using the tamper.

Adjust depth to your dose.

Loosen the adjustment ring, change the working depth and tighten the ring again. Use that setting again with the same coffee and dose.

When should you readjust?Show less

Different beans or a different amount of coffee can change fill height. Check again that the base touches the top layer sufficiently. Setting it deeper isn't a goal in itself.

Grip while turning.

The knurled sides give your fingers purchase. Choose a wooden or metal top; both versions have a stainless steel base.

YOUR PREPARATION

Want to level the top layer?

Choose this distributor to level your coffee before tamping.

  • You use a suitable filter basket.

The base has a diameter of 58.35 mm and is intended for suitable 58 mm filter baskets. Your basket's actual internal diameter determines the fit.

  • You want to use a consistent setting.

Adjust depth to your coffee and dose. If you use the same recipe again, you don't need to adjust the ring for every brew.

  • You want to level the surface.

For clumps and distribution deeper in the basket, use a different method, such as WDT. After levelling, compress the coffee with a tamper.

READY FOR THE TAMPER

Dose, adjust and turn.

  1. 01

    Fill your filter basket.

Dose your ground coffee into a clean, dry basket. Distribute coffee through the basket and break up any clumps before levelling the surface.

  2. 02

    Set the working depth.

Loosen the middle ring. Adjust the base to touch the top layer when the outer rim rests on the basket. Tighten the ring again.

  3. 03

    Level the surface.

Place the distributor straight on the basket and turn gently. Stop when the surface is level. Don't press harder on the tool while turning.

  4. 04

    Tamp and make your espresso.

Lift the distributor and tamp the coffee straight down with your tamper. Remove loose coffee from the rim and place the portafilter in the machine.

A flat top isn't the same as even distribution.

The CD distributor works at the surface. For even distribution, also pay attention to the coffee underneath.
More about distributionShow less

A WDT tool uses fine needles to break up clumps and move coffee through the basket. A rotating distributor mainly levels the top layer. Only use both if they add something to your preparation. An extra step doesn't automatically make your espresso better.

ANOTHER QUESTION?

About adjusting and using it.

Ask us a question
What's the difference between the CD distributor and CD tamper?

The distributor levels the surface with a turning movement. The tamper compresses the coffee. Use the distributor before tamping.

How deep should I set the distributor?

Let the base touch the top layer without already compressing it firmly. The right setting depends on your coffee, dose and filter basket. There's no fixed depth that works for every recipe.

Does this distributor replace a WDT tool?

No. A WDT tool breaks up clumps and works through the coffee bed. The CD distributor mainly levels the top layer. Which step is useful depends on how your ground coffee enters the basket.

Does it fit every 58 mm portafilter?

The base is 58.35 mm wide. Check the internal diameter of your filter basket. A portafilter labelled 58 mm doesn't guarantee that every basket fits.

Do the wooden and metal versions work differently?

Both have adjustable working depth and a base with four surfaces. Choose the top based on the finish and what feels comfortable in your hand.

How do I clean the distributor?

Remove coffee residue with a soft brush or cloth. If needed, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and dry afterwards. Keep the wooden top out of prolonged contact with water.
